TASTING NOTES

100% Sauvignon Blanc

Vivino: 4.3 | Tim Atkin: 93 points | Platters: 4.5 Stars

Iona is the coolest vineyard in the Cape 420m above sea-level high above the picturesque Elgin Valley. It is surrounded by the Kogelberg Nature Reserve and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean in the South. In a country where cool sites are precious these vineyards are like gold — the grapes ripening up to two months later than other Cape vineyards and in perfect balance.

The wine was made using wild fermentation, a method that enhances complexity. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation took place in 500L French oak barrels (second and third fill), where the wine aged for 11 months before being blended and spending an additional 3 months in stainless steel.

The 2023 vintage offers a complex and textured profile, with layered aromas of blackcurrant, white stone fruits, and a touch of minerality and salinity. On the palate, you can expect richness balanced by a zesty, long finish, with bright acidity framing notes of pink grapefruit, lemongrass, and a slight herbal undertone.

Food Pairing:

This wine pairs well with seafood dishes that incorporate Southeast Asian flavors like lime, chili, and coriander. It’s also great with Thai fish cakes.
