Porseleinberg

Porseleinberg is one of South Africa’s most acclaimed single-vineyard Syrahs, grown on extremely rocky, schist soils atop the Porseleinberg near Riebeek-Kasteel in the Swartland. Originally planted in the late 1990s and bought by Boekenhoutskloof in 2009, the site became a dedicated Syrah project with the first Porseleinberg vintage in 2010 and quickly earned international praise for its intense structure, purity of fruit, and ability to age, drawing comparisons with great Rhône Syrahs yet expressing a distinctly Swartland terroir. Porseleinberg is also associated with the Swartland Revolution, a group of innovative winemakers who transformed the region into a globally respected source of terroir-driven, minimal-intervention wines.

For many years Callie Louw farmed and made Porseleinberg Syrah, shaping its early success, but he departed in 2025 to start his own project, and winemaking duties are now transitioning to Eben Meiring alongside Boekenhoutskloof’s broader team. The wine is on allocation because production is very limited from this tiny, low-yield site while global demand from collectors and fine wine markets remains high, meaning available bottles are offered in restricted quantities.

The proof of his amazing craft shows in the ratings of his wine, having achieved just the third 100-point wine ever awarded to a South African wine by Tim Atkin MW. Porseleinberg's 2018 Syrah earned 100 points from Tim Atkin MW in his 2020 South Africa Report.

Porseleinberg Syrah

Porseleinberg is one of the best Syrahs in the world and often nicknamed 'Cape Cornas'. This iconic wine is pure 100% Syrah from Swartland and has an expressive bouquet with notes of blackberry, black olive tapenade, black pepper, and a hint of raspberry.

Made in neutral oak vats and concrete eggs, the wine is a pure expression of the grape and terroir -- the schist soils on which the grapes were grown show through on the lingering and complex finish. It is medium-bodied with silky tannins.
