Blankbottle Smaug the Magnificent 2021Regular price $75.00
Vivino: 4.2 | Tim Atkin: 93 points
A blend of Roussanne, Grenache blanc, Chenin blanc, Verdelho and Grenache Gris, this wine is complex with flavours of tangerine, lemon butter, some aniseed and savoury notes. It has a fuller, slightly tropical palate, hints of dried mango, finishing very long and spiced. This wine is made to age for another 5 to 7 years, and perfect for for the adventurous wine drinker.
This is the second release of Smaug the Magnificent. Like with most great things in life - this wine originated with a really bad experience where the liquor board stopped the sales of the 2011 vintage. It failed the wine board's standards that year, but three years later the board approved the same wine that has by now aged a few years in the bottle. Smaug is all about showing what a bit of age can do to a beautifully made South African white blend.
The label is designed by Pieters son at the age of 5, and a percentage of all wine sales go towards his pocket money.
