Headline Winemakers
Women Who Shape the Cape

Two remarkable winemakers. Four estates. One extraordinary vision for South African wine.

Some winemakers shape a single winery. Others shape entire regions.

This chapter introduces the Headline Winemakers — women whose skill, precision and vision are trusted across multiple estates. Their influence can be tasted across the Cape.

Andrea Mullineux

Andrea Mullineux grew up in San Francisco but found her calling in South Africa's Swartland.

After studying viticulture and oenology at UC Davis and working harvests across France and Napa Valley, she and her husband Chris founded Mullineux Family Wines in 2007.

What followed changed the trajectory of modern South African wine.

  • Wine Enthusiast Winemaker of the Year (2016) — the first South African ever to win.
  • Platter's Winery of the Year four times between 2014–2020.
  • Golden Vines "World's Best Rising Star" 2025.

Her wines — especially Chenin Blanc and Syrah — have become global benchmarks for Swartland terroir.

Today, Andrea also crafts wines at Leeu Passant, a sister estate dedicated to historic vineyard sites across the Cape.

Anmar Van Niekerk

At just 28 years old, Anmar van Niekerk was already leading the cellar at Gabriëlskloof.

After graduating from Stellenbosch University in 2019, she joined Gabriëlskloof as a harvest intern in 2020.

Within three years, she was promoted to winemaker — guiding the estate through one of its most celebrated periods.

Gabriëlskloof was named First Growth in Tim Atkin’s South Africa Report in both 2023 and 2024.

But Anmar’s story does not end there.

Together with her husband Albert, she also founded Van Niekerk Vintners — a boutique label producing small-batch heritage wines from the Overberg.

Her work earned her a place in WineLand’s 30 Under 30 list in 2024.

This was delicious. Full bodied, black fruit, silky soft tannins and a
hint of earthiness. Was surprised how drinkable it was considering it
was just a few years old.
