TASTING NOTES
Blend: 50% Syrah, 50% Grenache Noir
Waterleliefontein Syrah/Grenache 2021 is a refined and expressive South African red blend, crafted from equal parts Syrah and Grenache Noir grown on the slopes of the Van der Stel Pass in Walker Bay. This wine stands out for its elegant, slightly deeper hue and approachable character, even in its youth-a quality attributed to the Grenache component.
On the nose, it opens with perfumed floral notes interwoven with dried fruit, subtle spice (including coriander and a touch of star anise), and hints of potpourri. Aromas of red and black berries, fynbos, cured meat, and white pepper add further complexity.
The palate is bright and medium-bodied, showing excellent fruit definition and balance. Flavours of juicy red and black berries are complemented by clove, nutmeg, and a savory, meaty undertone. The wine’s lively acidity and powdery tannins provide structure and freshness, while the finish is long, intensely flavoured, and nuanced without being heavy.
Waterleliefontein Syrah/Grenache 2021 is a versatile wine, pairing beautifully with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled meats, and dishes featuring aromatic spices. Its poise, freshness, and layered complexity make it a standout choice for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.
Matured for 11 months in older 225-litre barrels, the 2021 vintage is intensely flavoured yet remains understated and elegant.
