TASTING NOTES
Blend: 60% Syrah, 40% Grenache Noir
Waterleliefontein Syrah Grenache 2022 is a refined and expressive South African red blend, crafted from equal parts Syrah and Grenache Noir grown on the slopes of the Van der Stel Pass in Walker Bay. This wine stands out for its elegant, slightly deeper hue and approachable character, even in its youth-a quality attributed to the Grenache component.
On the nose, it opens with perfumed floral notes interwoven with dried fruit, subtle spice (including coriander and a touch of star anise), and hints of potpourri. Aromas of red and black berries, fynbos, cured meat, and white pepper add further complexity.
The palate is bright and medium-bodied, showing excellent fruit definition and balance. Flavours of juicy red and black berries are complemented by clove, nutmeg, and a savory, meaty undertone. The wine’s lively acidity and powdery tannins provide structure and freshness, while the finish is long, intensely flavoured, and nuanced without being heavy.
The 2026 Platter gave this wine 4½ stars and says “Elegant tannin framed for 50/40 blend showcases perfumed & floral black cherry & berry fruit. Whiffs of liquorice & pepper, soft rounded palate complete highly enjoyable 2022.
Tim Atkin gave it 91 points in his 2025 SA report, describing it as “a well-judged Bot River blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache. Matured in older French oak, it’s floral, smooth and appealingly perfumed, with succulent raspberry, bramble and red cherry flavours and a violet top note.”
